The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree program

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree program - Middle and High School track - provides graduates with an Oregon Initial I Teaching License and an authorization to teach Language Arts or Social Studies in grades 5-12.  Students elect to follow either a Language Arts or a Social Studies endorsement; both have an English as a Second Language (ESOL) emphasis. There are two tracks available: a full-time, five-quarter track and a two year part-time track.  Both tracks begin in June. The part-time track concludes in summer of the second year.  OSU-Cascades' Master of Arts in Teaching program is nationally accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tests do I need to take?

Prior to entering the MAT program in June, all students must take and pass the following required licensure tests.

1. California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST) OR all three subtests of the PRAXIS PPST. Copies of passing scores need to be received by the MAT program prior to June.

2. The Oregon Educator Licensure Assessment Multiple Subjects Examination (ORELA MSE) Subtests I and II passing results must be received prior to beginning the program in June.

3. NES content specific exams in your field of choice (either Language Arts or Social Studies), must be taken and passing scores received prior to beginning the program in June.  If this exam is not passed it requires a 60 day waiting period before it can be retaken.

4.The ORELA Civil Rights exam must be completed before licensure.  We suggest you take this exam soon after completing TCE 499 Civil Rights in Education.

What does this program provide?

A Master of Arts in Teaching Language Arts degree with an emphasis in ESOL and and endorsement in either Social Studies or Language Arts that will enable you to teach at the Middle School and High School level.

What do you mean by "cohort"?
The program is managed according to the "cohort-model" concept. This means that all students stay together for the duration of the program, take the same classes at the same time and, in effect, develop a coherent and cohesive learning community.

How long is the program?

The full-time track begins summer term June 2012 and finishes summer term 2013 for a total of five terms.
The part-time track begins summer term June 2012 and finishes in summer of the second year.

Do I need to finish all the prerequisite classes before I am admitted?
No, but you are required to have taken the core classes before beginning the program in June 2012. It is not required that you have completed them in order to be admitted to the program.

Do I need to complete my volunteer hours before I am admitted?
You are required to have completed your volunteer hours (60) before beginning the program in June 2012. It is not required that you have completed them in order to be admitted to the program.

Do I need to show completion in all areas of the Form B before I am admitted?
If you will be taking some of the required course work from Form B during the terms prior to June 2012, simply list those courses on your Form B and state which term you will be taking them. You may be admissible to the program with a few courses missing from those required on Form B. However, a significant number of missing courses may result in your being denied an interview. Instead, we would recommend that you spend the next year or so working on this missing course work. Remember that once you are in the MAT program, you will be taking a full load of courses.

What can I be doing now to prepare?
Students interested in preparing themselves for entrance into the MAT program should take TCE 560 Research in Learning and TCE 499 Civil Rights in Education, complete testing requirements (see above), and complete at least 60 hours of observation or experience working with middle or high school age students. At least 30 of these hours must be in a secondary classroom.

How much does this program cost?
See tuition/fees for more information. Some additional costs associated with the program include the graduate application fee ($60), the cost of the required tests and fingerprinting which is approximately ($483), and licensure ($200). Depending on your placement locations there may be some commuting costs to Redmond, Sisters, LaPine, Prineville or Madras. The cost for books should also be budgeted into your planning with a cost that varies each term.

How can I learn more about the MAT program and the admission process?
We hold information sessions each fall and the dates are posted on this website under "Information Sessions". If you have specific questions regarding the program please feel free to contact Carolyn Platt, the MAT Secondary Advisor, at carolyn.platt@osucascades.edu or call her at (541) 322-3120.

STUDENT TEACHING PLACEMENT

OSU-Cascades offers a comprehensive student teaching experience in public school classrooms throughout Central Oregon.  The student teaching component is an important part of teacher formation education and meets the graduation requirement of practical experience in the field, utilizing the course content learned in the university classrooms.  The OSU-Cascades’ student teaching experiences coincide with all university classes, allowing you to apply what you are learning as you learn it.

SECONDARY STUDENT TEACHING AUTHORIZATION LEVEL

Upon successful completion of licensure requirements, OSU-Cascades’ Secondary MAT students obtain two authorizations that allow them to teach in middle school and high school.  Student teaching occurs throughout the school year in two different placements.

STUDENT TEACHING LOCATIONS

Following the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission’s (TSPC) requirements, you will be placed in public schools.  These include schools in Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson counties, with the advantage of exposure to rural schools as well as those in our larger communities.  This also allows for exposure to a diversity of school districts, policies, administration, staff, cultures, ethnic and economic groups.

PLACEMENT

The placements are all obtained by OSU-Cascades’ Coordinator of Educational Placement, Meredith Mason, in collaboration with each school principal.

Testing and Prerequisites

Prerequisites

You must pass all three subtests to pass the test.  The minimum passing score for each subtest is 220.  This is a computer based test. Testing appointments are available year round on a first-come first-served basis. There are a number of test sites in Oregon but none in Bend.   You will need to bring in your original score sheet for the licensure coordinator to photocopy as soon as you receive it.  This is true even if you stated that you wanted scores to be sent to OSU.
