The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) - Elementary/Early Childhood program provides graduates with a master's degree and an Oregon Initial I Teaching License with authorizations in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education. The full-time, 14-month program begins each June and concludes in July of the following year. OSU-Cascades' Master of Arts in Teaching program is nationally accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Answers your questions about what you should be taking in your undergraduate degree in order to successfully show competence in key subject areas for the MAT. Jessica Buhrle is the MAT Early Childhood/Elementary Advisor, click on her name to e-mail her. Her "Drop-In" advising hours are Wednesdays from 11am-3pm. She is located in Cascades Hall, room 233. You can also schedule an appointment for advising at other times by e-mailing her.
The first step in advising toward MAT program admission is to gather all of your transcripts and complete the Advising Worksheet. The Advising Worksheet gauges a student's competency in the skills needed to become a successful elementary school teacher, in such areas as mathematics, science, language arts, and music, as found on the Application Form B. Current undergraduate students who plan to continue into the OSU-Cascades MAT program, regardless of their major or institution, should use the Advising Worksheet as an additional reference to plan their undergraduate studies. The transcripts and Advising Worksheet can be e-mailed to jessica.buhrle@osucascades.edu or mailed to Jessica Buhrle at OSU Cascades Campus, 233 Cascades Hall, 2600 NW College Way, Bend, OR 97701. These documents can also be faxed to (541) 322-3139. Please include your contact information. You will be contacted for an advising appointment once the department has reviewed your submission.
Current undergraduates at OSU-Cascades (or those in the Central Oregon area needing to pick up additional coursework) may wish to read through a list of Suggested Central Oregon Community College (COCC) and OSU-Cascades classes which meet Form B Competency Areas.
For more information about COCC classes, go to COCC Schedule of Classes.
Students must show the following, all of which are detailed in the 2011-2012 Elementary Application Packet:

Student Teaching
Student Teacher Profile to be completed by applicant for submission to school principals. Due to meredith.mason@osucascades edu in electronic format no later than Friday, March 11, 2011.
What tests do I need to take?
CBEST - California Basic Education Skills Test
Passing scores required prior to entering the MAT program in June, 2011.
ORELA - Oregon Educator Licensure Assessment
Multiple Subjects Examination (Subtests I and II)
Civil Rights Exam (Protecting Student and Civil Rights in the Educational Environment)
Passing scores required by December 31, 2011
What do you mean by "cohort"?
The program is managed according to the "cohort-model" concept. This means that all students stay together for the duration of the program, take the same classes at the same time and, in effect, develop a coherent and cohesive learning community.
Do I need to finish all the prerequisite classes before I am admitted?
You are required to have taken the four education core classes before we recommend you for teacher licensure. These classes are Educational Psychology, Multicultural Issues, Foundation of Education, and Civil Rights. It is recommended that you take these classes before the program begins, but it is not required that you take them in order to be admitted to the program.
Do I need to show completion in all areas of the Form B before I am admitted?
You may be admissible to the program with a few courses missing from those required on Form B. However, a significant number of missing courses may result in your being denied an interview. Instead, we would recommend that you spend the next year or so working on this missing course work. Remember that once you are in the MAT program, you will be taking a full load of courses each term and picking up more than a few of the Form B classes will be difficult.
Can I do this program on a part-time basis?
The OSU-Cascades MAT program is only a full-time program.
What can I be doing now to prepare?
Students interested in preparing themselves for entrance into the MAT program should take the prerequisite classes listed above, complete testing requirements (see above), and complete at least 90 hours of successful experience working with school-age children or youth at the early childhood/elementary level.
How much does this program cost?
See tuition/fees for more information. Some additional costs associated with the program include the graduate application fee ($60), fingerprinting (approximately $72), and licensure ($200) in addition to testing costs (approximately $311), for a total of about $633. The cost for books should also be budgeted in to your planning with a cost that varies each term.
How can I learn more about the MAT program and the admission process?
Attending one of the MAT Information Sessions held in Cascades Hall on the OSU-Cascades campus is a good way to learn information about the program. If this website does not answer all your questions please contact Jessica Buhrle at jessica.buhrle@osucascades.edu or call her at (541) 322-3118 for more information.

TCE 416: Foundations of Education (2 credits) Students may substitute COCC ED 216 if taken previously
TCE 499: Civil Rights in Education (2 credits) Students may substitute an online course that covers Civil Rights in Education (that includes Oregon law).

or TCE 522: Racial and Cultural Harmony in the K-12 Classroom (online, 3 credits)
HDFS 311 Infant and Child Development (4) [3 credits in classroom, 1 credit practicum, prerequisite for HDFS 330]
HDFS 330 Fostering Learning in Early Childhood (4) [3 credits in classroom, 1 credit practicum, need to take HDFS 311 first]
Students must receive a "B" grade or higher in each TCE class.
More information about Central Oregon Community College (COCC) classes can be found online at the COCC Schedule of Classes. Please check for timely registration as classes are offered periodically and fill quickly.
If you feel that you have already taken one of the courses listed above at another institution please complete the "Waiver Request Form" below using the "Waiver Process Instructions".
Waiver Request Form To waive a program course with a class taken previously at another institution.
CPR Class: A CPR class is required prior to the start of the program (June). Either the infant-child or the child-adult class will suffice. The adult-only class does not meet the requirement. The First Aid class is not mandatory. Please contact your local Red Cross to enroll in a CPR class.
Prior to entering the MAT program in June, all students must take and pass the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST). In addition, the Oregon Educator Licensure Assessment Multiple Subjects Examination (ORELA MSE) Subtests I and II, and the ORELA Civil Rights exam are required. Copies of passing scores need to be received by the MAT program prior to the testing deadlines. Total testing/fingerprinting cost is approximately $311.
At the orientation in June all students who have been admitted to the program will be fingerprinted for TSPC. This is a licensure requirement for students seeking an Initial I teaching license. You will need to bring two checks with you to orientation, one will be for $10.00 made out to "Perry's Prints", and the other for $62.00 made out to TSPC. The only exception to this would be for students who have been working in the classroom and who can provide a TSPC fingerprint clearance printout at the orientation.

Exciting news! OSU-Cascades has moved forward with the ESOL program. We are now offering placements for the TCE 510 ESOL Internship. This internship will develop an ESOL work sample and give teachers the field experience opportunity to teach in an ESOL classroom.
Internship slots are limited. If you are interested in applying for this course please review the following list of required prerequisite course work.
Course work towards the ESOL endorsement will be offered each term. All ESOL classes are open to inservice teachers with instructor approval.
ESOL endorsement course requirements.

If you have not yet completed the required prerequisites and would like to pursue this endorsement you can direct any questions you might have to Carolyn Platt, Ph.D. at carolyn.platt@osucascades.edu or you can call at 541.322.3120.
