The first step in advising toward MAT program admission is to gather all of your transcripts and complete Form B. Form B gauges a student's competency in the skills needed to become a successful elementary school teacher, in such areas as mathematics, science, language arts, and music.

The transcripts and Form B can be e-mailed to jessica.buhrle@osucascades.edu or mailed to Jessica Buhrle at OSU Cascades Campus, 210 Cascades Hall, 2600 NW College Way, Bend, OR 97701.  These documents can also be faxed to (541) 322-3139.  Please include your contact information. You will be contacted for an advising appointment once the department has reviewed your submission.

Current undergraduate students who plan to continue into the OSU-Cascades MAT program, regardless of their major or institution, should use the Form B as an additional reference to plan their undergraduate studies and may wish to read through a list of Suggested Central Oregon Community College (COCC) and OSU-Cascades classes which meet Form B Competency Areas.

For more information about COCC classes, go to COCC Schedule of Classes.

Students must show the following, all of which will be detailed in the 2012-2013 Elementary Application Packet:

     •  Completed bachelor's degree;
     •  Minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 90 quarter hours of graded undergraduate work and all work completed thereafter;
     •  Competence in subject matter as defined in Form B Subject Competency List (below);
     •  At least 60 hours successful experience in working with school-age children or youth at the early childhood/elementary level
     •  Demonstrated effectiveness in oral and written communication;
     •  Sincere and appropriate desire to become a public school teacher and an understanding of the demands placed on a teacher;
     •  Satisfactory answers to "conduct" questions as required by the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC).

See testing requirements below.

Admission is selective and competitive, and experience working in diverse settings is highly recommended.

It is required that the following classes be taken prior to the start of the program (June):

TCE 411: Educational Psychology (3 credits) Students may substitute COCC ED 253 if taken previously

TCE 416: Foundations of Education (2 credits) Students may substitute COCC ED 216 if taken previously

TCE 419: Multicultural Issues in Education (2 credits) Students may substitute COCC ED 219 if taken previously

Waiver Process

If you feel that you have already taken one of the courses listed above at another institution please complete the "Waiver Request Form" below using the "Waiver Process Instructions".

Waiver Request Form  To waive a program course with a class taken previously at another institution.

Waiver Process Instructions

CPR Class: A CPR class is required prior to the start of the program (June). Either the infant-child or the child-adult class will suffice. The adult-only class does not meet the requirement. The First Aid class is not mandatory. Please contact your local Red Cross to enroll in a CPR class.

Testing Requirements

Prior to entering the MAT program in June 2012, all students must take and pass the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST) OR all three subtests of the PRAXIS PPST. Copies of passing scores need to be received by the MAT program prior to June.

In addition, the Oregon Educator Licensure Assessment Multiple Subjects Examination (ORELA MSE) Subtests I and II, must be passed and scores provided to the program before you begin the program in June 2012.

The ORELA Civil Rights exam must be passed and copies of passing scores received before the program begins in June 2012.

Total testing/fingerprinting cost is approximately $311. (it will be more if you elect to take the PRAXIS PPST instead of the CBEST).

If you have concerns about making these testing deadlines please make an appointment to see the program advisor, Jessica Buhrle at jessica.buhrle@osucascades.edu.

Fingerprinting

All students who have been admitted to the program will be fingerprinted for TSPC in July 2012.  This is an Oregon licensure requirement for students seeking an Initial I teaching license.  You will need to bring two checks with you to the fingerprinting session, one will be for $15.00 made out to "Perry's Prints", and the other for $62.00 made out to TSPC.  The only exception to this would be for students who have been working in the classroom and who can provide a TSPC fingerprint clearance printout at the orientation. The background check for volunteer work in the classroom does not meet TSPC requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

•  What tests do I need to take?

1. Prior to entering the MAT program in June, all students must take and pass the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST) OR all three subtests of the PRAXIS PPST and copies of passing scores need to be received by the MAT program by May 31st, 2012.

2. The Oregon Educator Licensure Assessment Multiple Subjects Examination (ORELA MSE) Subtests I and II must be passed and scores submitted to the MAT Program by August 27th, 2012.

3. The ORELA Civil Rights exam must be passed and scores submitted to the program prior to beginning your full time student teaching in the spring of 2013.

•  What do you mean by "cohort"?

The program is managed according to the "cohort-model" concept. This means that all students stay together for the duration of the program, take the same classes at the same time and, in effect, develop a coherent and cohesive learning community.

•  Do I need to finish all the prerequisite classes before I am admitted?

You are required to have taken the four education core classes before we recommend you for teacher licensure. These classes are Educational Psychology, Multicultural Issues, Foundation of Education, and Civil Rights. It is recommended that you take these classes before the program begins, but it is not required that you take them in order to be admitted to the program.

•  Do I need to show completion in all areas of the Form B before I am admitted?

You may be admissible to the program with a few courses missing from those required on Form B. However, a significant number of missing courses may result in your being denied an interview. Instead, we would recommend that you spend the next year or so working on this missing course work. Remember that once you are in the MAT program, you will be taking a full load of courses each term and picking up more than a few of the Form B classes will be difficult.

•  Can I do this program on a part-time basis?

The OSU-Cascades MAT program is only a full-time program.

•  What can I be doing now to prepare?

Students interested in preparing themselves for entrance into the MAT program should take the prerequisite classes listed above, complete testing requirements (see above), and complete at least 90 hours of successful experience working with school-age children or youth at the early childhood/elementary level.

•  How much does this program cost?

See tuition/fees for more information. Some additional costs associated with the program include the graduate application fee ($60), fingerprinting (approximately $77), and licensure ($200) in addition to testing costs (approximately $311), for a total of about $638. The cost for books should also be budgeted in to your planning with a cost that varies each term.

•  How can I learn more about the MAT program and the admission process?

Attending one of the MAT Information Sessions held in Cascades Hall on the OSU-Cascades campus is a good way to learn information about the program. Click on "Information Sessions" on the side bar for dates. If this website does not answer all your questions please contact Jessica Buhrle at jessica.buhrle@osucascades.edu or call her at (541) 322-3118 for more information.

Student Teaching

 Sage Elementary School, Redmond, Student Teaching Placement Site

OSU-Cascades offers a comprehensive student teaching experience in public school classrooms throughout Central Oregon.  The student teaching component is an important part of teacher formation education and meets the graduation requirement of practical experience in the field, utilizing the course content learned in the university classrooms.  OSU-Cascades nine-month student teaching experience coincides with all university classes, allowing you to apply what you are learning as you learn it.

EARLY CHILDHOOD-ELEMENTARY STUDENT TEACHING AUTHORIZATION LEVELS

OSU-Cascades’ MAT students obtain two authorizations: Early Childhood and Elementary.  Six months are spent student teaching in one authorization level and classroom and three months in the other authorization and classroom.  The six month student teaching experience takes place in fall and spring terms, September through December and April through June.  The three month student teaching experience takes place in winter term, January through March.

STUDENT TEACHING LOCATIONS

Following Teacher Standards and Practices Commission’s requirements, you will be placed in public schools.  These include schools in Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson counties, with the advantage of exposure to rural schools as well as those in our larger communities.  This also allows for exposure to a diversity of school districts, policies, administration, staff, cultures, ethnic and economic groups.

PLACEMENT

The placements are all obtained by OSU-Cascades’ Coordinator of Educational Placement, meredith.mason@osucascades.edu, in collaboration with each school principal.
