Applications are now being accepted for the June 2011 cohort.
Answers your questions about what you should be taking in your undergraduate degree in order to successfully show competence in key subject areas for the MAT. Jessica Buhrle is the MAT Early Childhood/Elementary Advisor, click on her name to e-mail her. Her "Drop-In" advising hours are Wednesdays from 11am-3pm. She is located in Cascades Hall, room 233. You can also schedule an appointment for advising at other times by e-mailing her.
The first step in advising toward MAT program admission is to gather all of your transcripts and complete the Advising Worksheet. The Advising Worksheet gauges a student's competency in the skills needed to become a successful elementary school teacher, in such areas as mathematics, science, language arts, and music, as found on the Application Form B. Current undergraduate students who plan to continue into the OSU-Cascades MAT program, regardless of their major or institution, should use the Advising Worksheet as an additional reference to plan their undergraduate studies. The transcripts and Advising Worksheet can be e-mailed to jessica.buhrle@osucascades.edu or mailed to Jessica Buhrle at OSU Cascades Campus, 233 Cascades Hall, 2600 NW College Way, Bend, OR 97701. These documents can also be faxed to (541) 322-3139. Please include your contact information. You will be contacted for an advising appointment once the department has reviewed your submission.
Current undergraduates at OSU-Cascades (or those in the Central Oregon area needing to pick up additional coursework) may wish to read through a list of Suggested Central Oregon Community College (COCC) and OSU-Cascades classes which meet Form B Competency Areas.
For more information about COCC classes, go to COCC Schedule of Classes.

ORELA - Oregon Educator Licensure Assessment
Multiple Subjects Examination (Subtests I and II)
Civil Rights Exam (Protecting Student and Civil Rights in the Educational Environment)

What do you mean by "cohort"?
The program is managed according to the "cohort-model" concept. This means that all students stay together for the duration of the program, take the same classes at the same time and, in effect, develop a coherent and cohesive learning community.
Do I need to finish all the prerequisite classes before I am admitted?
You are required to have taken the four education core classes before we recommend you for teacher licensure. These classes are Educational Psychology, Multicultural Issues, Foundation of Education, and Civil Rights. It is recommended that you take these classes before the program begins, but it is not required that you take them in order to be admitted to the program.
Do I need to show completion in all areas of the Form B before I am admitted?
You may be admissible to the program with a few courses missing from those required on Form B. However, a significant number of missing courses may result in your being denied an interview. Instead, we would recommend that you spend the next year or so working on this missing course work. Remember that once you are in the MAT program, you will be taking a full load of courses each term and picking up more than a few of the Form B classes will be difficult.
Can I do this program on a part-time basis?
The OSU-Cascades MAT program is only a full-time program.
What can I be doing now to prepare?
Students interested in preparing themselves for entrance into the MAT program should take the prerequisite classes listed above, complete testing requirements (see above), and complete at least 90 hours of successful experience working with school-age children or youth at the early childhood/elementary level.
How much does this program cost?
See tuition/fees for more information. Some additional costs associated with the program include the graduate application fee ($60), fingerprinting (approximately $72), and licensure ($200) in addition to testing costs (approximately $311), for a total of about $633. The cost for books should also be budgeted in to your planning with a cost that varies each term.
How can I learn more about the MAT program and the admission process?
Attending one of the MAT Information Sessions held in Cascades Hall on the OSU-Cascades campus is a good way to learn information about the program. If this website does not answer all your questions please contact Jessica Buhrle at jessica.buhrle@osucascades.edu or call her at (541) 322-3118 for more information.
