The Oregon State Legislature is facing budget challenges and is considering cuts to the state higher education budget, out of which OSU-Cascades Campus is funded. If you would like to voice your opinion, below is contact information for the Chancellor of the Oregon University System and for Central Oregon legislators (if you live outside of Central Oregon, go to http://www.leg.state.or.us/findlegsltr/ to find your local legislator) and the co-chairs of the Ways and Means Committee, and its Education SubCommittee.
TIPS ON WRITING ELECTED OFFICIALS
As you write your e-mails, below are some points to consider. Do remember to include your home address in your message. Feel free to send your e-mail to the Chancellor, your legislators, and to the committee co-chairs for consideration.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Central Oregon NEEDS OSU-Cascades
- The key factor in driving economic development in Central Oregon is a university presence, as confirmed by EDCO and leading economic development consultants.
- OSU-Cascades generates $15 million in economic activity in Central Oregon through its daily operations and by the activities of its 700 students (170 taking classes at COCC), staff and faculty.
- OSU-Cascades enhances the offerings and appeal of COCC; 42% of COCC’s 5,700 students plan to seek a four-year degree.
OSU-Cascades is MAKING A DIFFERENCE in Central Oregon
- Nearly 75% of students are from Central Oregon and most plan to stay in Central Oregon to live and work.
- 50% of graduates represent the first generation in their family to earn a degree. Without OSU-Cascades, these students may not pursue higher education.
OSU-Cascades risks losing SIGNIFICANT MOMENTUM
- A pattern of repeated speculation by the State over the 7-year history of the campus about its future hurts efforts to grow the campus.
- Momentum gained by a record 18% spring (2009) enrollment increase is jeopardized.
- Ground gained by OSU-Cascades in the business and private community to develop new academic programs is dampened without the full support of the State.

- More than 150 businesses and organizations support OSU-Cascades through internships, practicums and student and faculty research opportunities.
- Faculty serve in leadership positions on the boards of many local and regional non-profit organizations, including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Nature of Words, Oregon School Counseling Association, Deschutes Provincial Advisory Committee, Oregon Arts Commission, to name a few.
