OSU-Cascades lunchtime lecture looks at preschool’s role in school -- and life success

Is preschool critical for children's success in school -- and in life? On Wednesday, February 1, 2012, during Oregon State University - Cascades second “It's in the Bag” lecture of the academic year, Assistant Professor Shannon Lipscomb will address the role of preschool and child care experiences in a presentation titled “It’s Not all ABCs.  What Makes Preschool a Path to Success?”

Lipscomb joined the human development and family sciences program at Oregon State University –Cascades in 2010.  In “It’s Not all ABCs.  What Makes Preschool a Path to Success?” she will examine the types of preschool and child care experiences that matter most and explore the research behind the media hype and the policies that aim to improve early learning in Oregon to give parents and teachers valuable information to  help children to get off to a good start.

Lipscomb examines children's development of school readiness within child care and early education settings. Her work focuses on children’s self-regulation skills that facilitate later school success, and on vulnerable populations of children, including those involved in the child welfare system. She also conducts applied research on the effectiveness of policies and programs that strive to improve the quality of child care and early learning in Oregon, and to increase access to quality care for children from vulnerable populations.  Lipscomb received her bachelor’s degree from Whitman College in 2000 and her Ph.D. from University of California, Davis in June 2007.
