OSU-Cascades Science Pub explores H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest
Tucked in the western Cascades between Eugene and Sisters, the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest has been a hotbed for forest ecosystems research for decades. Oregon State University - Cascades next Science Pub on Tuesday, March 15, dives into that hotbed with the Forest’s lead scientist, OSU Professor Barbara Bond, to give attendees a "View from the Middle of the Mountains."
Alternately vilified and glorified for the research it output in the late 20th century, Bond will explain how the Andrews Forest has inexorably changed the way we understand and manage forests and forest streams, and how the research underway today is more important than ever – and as much about people as it is about the forest.
Bond, who has been on the OSU faculty since 1992, is an expert on the physiology of tree growth processes. She studies such issues as changes in structure and function in aging forests, ecohydrological interactions in small watersheds, and impacts of large-scale plantations of exotic forest trees on water resources in Patagonia.
Bond has twice received recognition from OSU graduate students with the Outstanding Faculty Award and is a widely published researcher. One of her research publications was cited by Oxford University Press as one of the 20 most important papers in ecology. In her laboratory, she has worked with students ranging from high school to the post-doctoral level, and is a strong advocate for encouraging more women to pursue careers in science.
She is also the first holder of the Ruth H. Spaniol Chair of Renewable Resources.
Reservations are required for the popular Science Pub lectures. Please note, this Science Pub will be held at the Three Creeks Brewery in Sisters. Science Pubs take place from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. Networking and food and beverage service begin at 5:30 p.m, and the presentation begins at 6:00 p.m. Science Pubs are sponsored by OSU-Cascades and are free and open to community members, and limited to 100 guests.
