Science Pub Defines a 21st Century Education for Middle and High Schoolers

The Science Pub series, a collaboration between Oregon State University - Cascades Campus and the OSU Alumni Association, takes science out of the stuffy laboratory and into ... your local pub!  The series continues on Tuesday, November 17 with “Defining a 21st Century Education,” presented by Jay Casbon, the senior professor in OSU-Cascades’ master of arts in teaching (MAT) program.

A former elementary and high school teacher, Casbon will explore how middle and high school students’ approach to learning differs from that of previous generations and discuss how our schools can meet the demands to prepare these students for the rigors of an ever-changing competitive world.  Influenced by technology, the media and a global environment, today’s young people have non-traditional learning requirements that schools must meet in order for students to be successful.  Referencing research efforts that have focused on new directions for public education over the past 15 years, Casbon will examine how that research has informed and influenced the current debate about a new definition for learning for Oregon’s secondary school students.

Casbon served as campus executive officer for OSU-Cascades from 2001 to 2005 and is now a professor of education and counseling.  He is involved with efforts to revitalize public schools and universities, and is an advocate for small schools through the Small School Workshop in Chicago, Educational Trust in Washington D.C., and New School Alliance in New York.  He is a founding board member of the National Center for Teacher Formation, and was a founding member of the National Aspiring Principal’s Center in Providence, Rhode Island.  He teaches courses including New Perspectives for Rural Education and Civil Rights: New Perspectives.
