Wilderness First Aid

Weekly Workshop

First Aid Basics of the Backcountry

Are you actively seeking out new outdoor adventures in Central Oregon? Do you try and spend as much time outside recreating as inside working? Are you prepared to handle an emergency when medical care is not immediately accessible? Too often people find themselves ill-prepared to deal with emergency medical situations in the backcountry. Cascades Adventures is offering workshops on basic wilderness first aid in order to help prepare for those fateful moments. This week will continue a series of weekly workshops focused on wilderness first aid. Come and learn about wilderness first aid in a controlled environment and practice new skills using case studies from the NOLS-Wilderness Medical Institute.

Exploring Central Oregon Geology

The geology of Central Oregon represents several millennia of terrestrial disturbance and upheaval. At first glance the landscape seems uncomplicated and similar but underneath lies a plethora of complex tales from the ancient past. Cascades Adventures will be hiking into our geologic past in the westernmost province of the Blue Mountains. Come join us Saturday, November 22nd as we hike to an ancient column of volcanic tuff and explore the brightly colored soils from eons ago. This is a moderately strenuous hike covering a roundtrip distance of 5.6 mile to the base of Steins Pillar. The end of the day will consist of a couple ¼ & ½ mile walks at the Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.

Crooked River Road Replanting

Attention! Attention! Due to the impressive work and smashing success of our recent service project, Cascades Adventures has decided to take on a second project for the fall quarter. On Sunday, November 23rd, Cascades Adventures will be collaborating with the Students for Sustainable Resources club to reclaim roads near the Crooked River. The roads are located on federal land that is managed by the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. Both of these agencies are involved in this project and are in need of our help to reclaim our grasslands before the ground freezes. The goal of the project is to help expedite the desert's natural succession by actively replanting native shrubs and grasses. Transportation, tools, shrubs and grasses will all be provided, we just need volunteers. Come join Cascades Adventures and the Students for Sustainable Resources club in supporting our open spaces and beautiful places.

Three Rivers Traverse Slideshow

Come join Cascades Adventures in Hitchcock auditorium for a night of expeditionary tales presented by Bend locals Rob Walker and Karen Holm. During the summer of 2007, Rob and Karen went north to paddle a Three River traverse from Skagway Alaska to the Beaufort sea in the arctic. The adventure took them roughly 1400 miles over mountain passes and down wild northern rivers to a terminus near the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Help us in welcoming these human-powered adventurers as they share their journey with us. Admission is free to all, so bring your families and friends to enjoy an evening of entertainment.
